Casual Interactions
My fascination lies at the intersection of intentional and casual interactions among groups of people: within families, groups of friends, audience members at a concert, or strangers walking past each other on the street. This concentration has naturally organized my project into a photographic anthology of interpersonal relations. I love unusual juxtapositions in facial expressions or gestures, and moments of intimacy, often in the form of intense eye contact and casual grazes of the arm. In any space, I experience an initial chaotic rush of the energies and emotions of those around me beginning to swallow me up, but when I am photographing, the excess noise abruptly cancels out, and then I am only aware of specific beacons in my periphery, dozens of serendipitous tableaus that have presented themselves so obviously to me that taking the actual picture feels like dejavu.
